I’m thinking of moving to Gold Beach, Oregon. Can anyone tell me anything about that area?

I found a piece of property I’m really in love with in Gold Beach. Myself and my horses would be moving up there. I am a photographer and part time horse trainer. I know that it is rainy a lot more up there, but I would like to know a little about what there is to do and if it’s really as beautiful as everyone says. I’ve been all the way up the CA coast and it’s gorgeous, so I assume the South Oregon coast is just as beautiful, if not more beautiful. Am I right? Someone tell me more!

It all depends on what you are looking for. I live in Brookings, about 20 miles south of Gold Beach (same county). Our temperature averages 5 to 10 degrees warmer than theirs, and we have a lot less wind. If you like wind you will love Gold Beach. If you don’t, then I suggest a different area.

Before you purchase any land, I would suggest a visit of at least 2 weeks. Major shopping is about 90 minutes away. Winters are pretty nasty, wind and rain. Huge issues with county funding sources (we are close to being bankrupt) so there have been a lot of cuts in county services, including the sheriffs office. If the land you are looking at is not improved, it takes a long time to get permits to build, and they are expensive. Construction costs are also fairly high. Real estate prices are starting to come down, but Californians are still streaming north and inflating the values. Traffic is horrible in the summer due to the tourists. That’s the bad news.

The good news is the southern Oregon coastline is about as spectacular as it gets. We also have old growth forests and even have Redwoods down here in our area of the county. Wildlife is abundant (you will see bears, cougar, deer, elk, and all assortments of smaller critters as well as more birds than one person can identify), sea creatures, beautiful ports, and an art community that is second to none in both Gold Beach and Brookings. We selected Brookings because of the services available (a little more shopping) and much better weather. Our high temp this past summer was 105, that’s why they call Brookings the banana belt of the Oregon Coast.

Seriously, before you buy anything, spend a week or two to get a feel for the area. Don’t buy something sight unseen. If you are used to the conveniences of a city, then this is definitely not the area for you. People out here move at a different pace. Things don’t open until 10:00 in the morning and close at 3:00 in the afternoon. No gas stations open all night, no all night restaurants, fairly poor healthcare availability, fairly high cost of living. To live here, you will have to sacrifice some of the creature comforts, but if you are like me, it is worth it. Good luck.

DIGEST: Roethlisberger accuser’s side heard
A Georgia college student said she felt powerless to stop a short-tempered Ben Roethlisberger from having sex with her in a bar bathroom even though she told him to stop, telling investigators: “I’m a little girl and he’s a big boy.”
