Here at Bear Paw Ranch, we believe in breeding the best possible GSP we can through our strict breeding criteria. We evaluate our breeders along three categories: health and structure, temperament, and drive.
Health & Structure
We believe that first and foremost, a dog needs to be healthy. This means structural integrity through things like good bone structure, correct joints, and proportionate build. Correct structure helps a dog move in the field, maintain stamina, and reduces vet bills for you.
Next, we evaluate temperament. Temperament is involved in every interaction you have with the dog. A dog with a sound temperament will be slow to aggression and quick to learn. He will assess a situation before reacting to it. Dogs with good temperament are intelligent, aware of their surroundings, and have strong loyalty. We love this in our dogs and don't compromise this in our breeding program.
We select for intelligent dogs who excel in both families and in one-on-one environments (one owner, one dog). These dogs do not have strong alpha personalities, allowing them to work well in a home with multiple dogs.
Hunting Ability & Drive
This is perhaps one of the most important traits we select for in our program. We breed bird dogs, therefore the dogs need to be birdy. There are very few things in the world that are more beautiful than a bird-dog puppy pointing birds at just a few weeks of age. But it does happen and, here at the ranch, we see it all the time. That strong natural drive is what makes your job easy, the dog already loves birds and loves to retrieve, naturally, all you have to do is teach him which one and help him do it with a little style.
Our Long-Term Service to You
We love our dogs and we love our owners. To help you be as successful as possible, we are ALWAYS available for you. If you have any question, concern, or story to tell, we are here for you. You can always contact us, day or night, and we will do whatever we can to help you.
Because we deal with our dogs every day, we are familiar with their growth patterns, hormone changes, and understand their quirks. This knowledge has allowed us to save our owners thousands of dollars in vet bills. Additionally, we offer a 24-month genetic health guarantee because we are so confident in our breeding program.
We also have our informational sister site: Bear Paw Arsenal, designed to keep you posted with information about GSPs, understanding genetics, training tips, and cutting-edge information on canine care and maintenance.
In 2017 we started a Facebook Group exclusively for our buyers, where we share training tips, ideas on kennel design, and discuss products we like. It is a very positive community full of support and a general love for the breed.
Lastly, we never want you to feel like you're out of options with your dog. If you find you can no longer care for your dog, for any reason, at any age, in any condition, we will happily take him back, no questions asked. We will either retire him at the ranch or rehome him, whatever is better for the dog.
Thank you for the pleasure! ~Julie Petersen, Midwoof
